Home News From The 'Verse Movies Trailer: THE DARK TOWER gives a LAST ACTION HERO vibe in first...

We’ve been waiting so long – oh gods, so so long! – for our first look at IDRIS ELBA as The Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey as Walter Padick, in Nikolaj Arcel‘s adaptation of the epic Stephen King novels. And now that it is here, we are detecting a familiar vibe to the plot of the film. That’s right: Idris has gone full Schwarzenegger.

In a trailer that recalls the 1993 critically-derided Arnie flick LAST ACTION HERO, young protagonist Jake Chambers (played by TOM TAYLOR) is driven by visions of a strange and violent world, full of heroes and villains. When he is drawn to a portal that leads to the alternative dimension of Mid-World, he finds himself in the middle of an eternal battle for the control of The Dark Tower, a structure that holds sway over both that world and ours.

And the Man In Black himself – the sorcerer Walter Padick, played by McConaughey – has also found the portal too and, much like Charles Dance in LAH, finds Earth a fun place to play around in. Chambers and the last Gunslinger (Elba) must travel back and stop Padick and his minions, at all costs. No magic glowing cinema ticket require here.

The good news is that the teaser definitely has the wow factor when it comes to its bigger set pieces, especially when Idris is on screen, giving it the ‘zen master of bullets’ dialogue. It’s going to be interesting to see if Arcel can translate to his film some of the deeper epic saga elements of the books that the fans worship, rather than just focus on the spectacle.

This first tease comes off the back of one of the coolest Twitter interactions between stars Elba and McConaughey, leading up to its release. If the boys can keep this banter up until the THE DARK TOWER‘s release in August, we will be particularly happy bunnies.

Oooh. Chills!!

Yesterday also saw the revelation of two new character posters for THE DARK TOWER, too. Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it…

THE DARK TOWER is a big screen adaptation of the seminal novel series by Stephen King, written by Akiva Goldsman, Jeff Pinkner and Ander Thomas Jensen, and directed by Nikolaj Arcel (A ROYAL AFFAIR). Starring IDRIS ELBA, Matthew McConaughey, TOM TAYLOR and Jackie Earle Haley, THE DARK TOWER tells the story of Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) is a young 11-year-old adventure seeker who discovers clues about another dimension called Mid-World. Upon following the mystery, he is spirited away to Mid-World where he encounters a The Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, who roams an Old West-like landscape where “the world has moved on” in pursuit of the ‘Man In Black’, also searching for the fabled Dark Tower, in the hopes that reaching it will preserve his dying world.  But with various monsters and a vicious sorcerer named Walter Padick (Matthew McConaughey) hot on their trail, the unlikely duo find that their quest may be difficult to complete. The film mis scheduled for a U.S. release date of 4th August 2017.
