It’s been a rollercoaster twenty-four hours for the legendary adventurer, Lara Croft. Only yesterday were fans teased with a first proper poster for the upcoming TOMB RAIDER, starring THE MAN FROM UNCLE‘s Alicia Vikander as the titular heroine – and almost instantly, t’interweb’s responded with instant derision at the poor Photoshop efforts on display, from the messily defined triceps and the ridiculous red lens flares to Alicia’s Silly Putty neck. The hits came again and again and again and again… Clearly, some damage control had to be put in place on the part of Warner Bros.
The good news is, the new trailer isn’t the colossal car crash the poster implies. Riffing heavily on the action adventure legacy of the original game, Vikander is tested to the limits as director Roar Uthaug clearly has fun playing with the toy box of his first Hollywood film, giving us all the dives, swings, dives and sprints that we so desperately need from a TOMB RAIDER flick.
Also in the plus column is, Vikander displays a real sense of beginning and vulnerability to the character of Croft on the first steps of her story, miles away from the cock-sure arrogance of Angelina Jolie in her 2001 effort.
“She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits,” Vikander told EW earlier this summer, “but we’ve stripped away all of her experience. She hasn’t gone on an adventure just yet… This is the beginning.”
TOMB RAIDER also features appearances from Walton Goggins as Father Mathias Vogel, Daniel Wu as ship captain Lu Ren, DOMINIC WEST as Lord Richard Croft, Lara’s deceased archaeologist father, KRISTIN SCOTT-THOMAS and NICK FROST in as-yet-undisclosed roles, and HANNAH JOHN-KAMEN as Sophie, Croft’s flatmate and best friend. Handy to have some actual British accents in a film about an English action hero, of course.
The proof is in the pudding, of course, and we’ll see the end result of everyone’s efforts when the film hits screens in March. And here’s hoping we see some better poster work from WB’s Promotion Department, too.
