On yesterday’s STAR WARS SHOW, recorded at Lucasfilm HQ with hosts Andi Gutierrez and Peter Townley, the director of ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY – our very own Welsh wunderkind, GARETH EDWARDS – dropped by to unveil a few tasty titbits.
First up, he showed off the very tasty new poster for the film, showcasing a very pensive looking Jyn Erso (FELICITY JONES) above her team of spies – Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) and Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed) – tasked with striking at the Empire’s plans for their ‘Ultimate Weapon’, the Death Star.
That space station of note looms marge in the background, with a certain Dark Lord Of The Sith casting a sinister presence in its shadow. All in all, very much focused around the characters of this forthcoming installment in the STAR WARS universe.
Edwards also announced the release of what may be the last trailer for the film before its release in December: beginning with what is our first look at Mads Mikkelson‘s role in all of this – as well as Jyn’s father, Galen Erso the principle designer of the Death Star and the one that got the information to the Rebels about the thing in the first place (much to Vader’s displeasure, it appears.)
Yes, Vader is in the film and not just in a shadowy cameo, either – Ben Mendelsohn‘s Orson Krennic is very much aware at the firepower he’s in command of here and is insistent that Vader knows it, too.
One shot of interest is that of a planet very much getting the lion’s share of that firepower – we know that Jimmy Smits is reprising his role of Senator Bail Organa, and we know from the original 1977 A NEW HOPE that the first shot fired from the Death Star was the ‘popping of the cherry’. Could we be seeing the destruction of Alderaan from a victim’s POV, perhaps? This could be bringing the entire legacy round full circle, if that is the case.
Either way, we find out exactly the fate of the Rogue One mission, Alderaan, and the rest of this new ensemble when the film arrives on the 17th December. Not long to go now, rebels.
ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To for Lucasfilm and distributed by Walt Disney Studios, is a spin-off film within the STAR WARS franchise, set prior to the events of STAR WARS EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE. Directed by GARETH EDWARDS and written by GARY WHITTA and Chris Weltz, the film follows the foundation of the Galactic Empire, when a wayward band of Rebel fighters comes together to carry out a desperate mission: to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor’s rule. The film stars FELICITY JONES, Diego Luna, RIZ AHMED, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen and Alan Tudyk. The film is scheduled for a 16th December, 2016 worldwide release.
