It’s safe to say that we are staring down the barrel of a new evolution – not just of mutants but of superhero movies. No longer wanting to be seen simply pulling on the spandex and fighting crime, the latest incarnation of of superpowered flicks are dancing with other established genres to keep themselves fresh – it’s only a matter of time before we see the first Superhero/Western movie mashup!
We’ve had Period War Movie with WONDER WOMAN, we’ve had Heist Movie with ANT-MAN, we’ve touched on SHUTTER ISLAND-style Psychological Drama on the small screen with LEGION, by all reports we’re even soon to get Slapstick Comedy with THOR: RAGNAROK… the only genre we haven’t seen touched upon yet is Horror. And now, thank to a new trailer of Josh Boone (THE FAULT IN OUR STARS)’s THE NEW MUTANTS, looks like we’re getting that, too.
“Everyone has demons”, says the film’s catchline. Coming from 20th Century Fox and effectively being the eleventh chapter in the X-MEN cinematic saga, Boone – along with his screenwriting partner Knate Lee – appear to be pushing the Mutant population to their absolute limits, with a collective of young kids with abilities, held in a secret facility, taking on not only their burgeoning powers but also a threat from within.
There are five mutants featured in the film: Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik, aka Colossus’ sister (played by SPLIT‘s Anya Taylor-Joy), Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane (GAME OF THRONES‘ MAISIE WILLIAMS), Sam Guthrie, aka Cannonball (CHARLIE HEATON, best known as Jonathan Byers in STRANGER THINGS), Roberto da Costa, aka Sunspot (Henry Zaga) and last but not least, Danielle Moonstar, aka Mirage (played by the delightfully named Blu Hunt). Which of the five is proving to be the trouble inside is yet to be determined but, let’s be honest, it’s going to be one of them causing all the bumps in the night, with or without their knowledge. You’ve seen horror films before, you know how this works.
That being said, Boone and Lee may be wanting to completely subvert the genre with this first of a planned trilogy based around the NEW MUTANTS comic created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, back in t’early ’80s. We’ll find out when the movie is released in April, next year.
THE NEW MUTANTS is an upcoming horror film, set in the superhero X-MEN Universe and distributed by 20th Century Fox. Directed and written by Josh Boone (co-written by Knate Lee), the film features five young mutants discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fighting to escape their past sins and save themselves. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy (Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik), MAISIE WILLIAMS (Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane), CHARLIE HEATON (Sam Guthrie, aka Cannonball), Henry Zaga (Roberto da Costa, aka Sunspot) and Blu Hunt (Danielle Moonstar, aka Mirage), alongside Alice Braga and Happy Anderson. The film is scheduled for a UK and International release date of 13th April 2018.
