One of the most eagerly anticipated films of 2017 is the return of director Luc Besson to the science fiction genre, with his adaptation of the cult French comics series VALERIAN AND LAURELINE, VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS.
At this weeks CinemaCon 2017, cinema exhibitors, distributors and gathered press are being shown sneak peak and trailers for the upcoming big releases and, off the back of that, the interwebs are getting some of these teases shared, too. The new VALERIAN… trailer gives a sense of the film’s playful colour palette and tone, and massive sense of scale and universe.
We get to see some incredible landscapes and creatures, all soundtracked to an adapted take on the Beatles classic ‘Because’ – the songs ethereal atmosphere certainly plays to Besson’s artistic sensibilities, first seen in films such as THE FIFTH ELEMENT. Here, though, he really is pushing the boundaries of imagery and scale, and we imagine this will really work nicely on the inevitable IMAX 3D screenings that will come with the films release.
The trailer puts front-and-centre the partnership of special operatives Valerian, played by Dane DeHaan (CHRONICLE) and Cara Delevingne (SUICIDE SQUAD); we also get our first glimpse of CLIVE OWEN, starring as the pair’s commander, the delightfully named Arün Filitt. A moniker I’m betting Owen is thrilled to have listed in his iMDb credits!
People got to see their first glimpse of the film at last years San Diego Comic-Con – it’s been a long wait but this new tease tells us it’s been certainly worth it. Not long to go now, it hits screens this July. Ooh, just as SDCC 2017 takes place: some thing to do during the evening while you’re in town, perhaps…
