Each week, we take a look at the forthcoming ALTERNA COMICS titles, either in store or made available on the comiXology digital comics platform, giving you a comprehensive guide to your comics pull list.

Maybe there’s something in the water, a sense of nostalgia that’s running around everywhere. The story of THE DEADBEAT is something that’s been done before, and recently, too: Mark Millar took on the story of an aging superhero, returning to former glory in STARLIGHT, but his approach was much more from the fantastical BUCK ROGERS perspective. You could even say THE INCREDIBLES was about a hero’s struggle to face the past and come out the other side, renewed.

  • In THE DEADBEAT Vol. 1, writer/artist Jeremy Massie comes at the story from the other end of the end of the bottle: a superhero, beaten and broken by the losses in his life, given an opportunity to return and redeem. I was a bit distracted by a couple of artistic choices – the faded-out flashback was hard work, especially when dealing with some definitive action and story beats, and sometimes the artwork got a little loose around the edges, something that suited the downcast and despondent sections of the Deadbeat’s life but could have needed some stronger lines when dealing with the hero in the prime of his life and when faced with the chance to make amends, not only with his estranged daughter but in his life in general. Nitpicking, to be fair, especially when the characterisation is so strong – you can tell Massie is very much interested in the struggle, both moral and physical, of Vera and her story is a emotionally powerful one. It says a lot that the main character’s name – superhero or otherwise – is ever revealed on page.

As I’m relatively new to Alterna’s output, I’m unfamiliar with this series, originally serialised in four mini-comics, and I don’t know if Massie is considering ever returning to the world of the Deadbeat. I, for one, would like to see more of the world he’s created, as well as more of the conflicted character of Vera, beyond this book. Fingers crossed. For now, enjoy this cracking collected edition.

THE DEADBEAT VOL.1

Writer/Artist: Gregory Schoen

“This ‘slice of super-life’ graphic novel revolves around a down-on-his-luck former superhero and his estranged daughter as they come to terms with one another and the events that drove a wedge between them years ago.

The Deadbeat was one of the world’s greatest heroes. He used to be able to save the day, the city, and everything else in between. But when his estranged daughter comes back into his life, will he be able to save their broken relationship?

Jeremy Massie crafts an emotional tale about a down-on-his-luck former superhero coming face to face with the daughter he barely ever knew.
