Each week, we take a look at the forthcoming AFTERSHOCK COMICS titles available in stores, giving you a comprehensive guide to your comics pull list.

AfterShock are still a brand new publishing house but you simply wouldn’t guess it from the strength of the titles they’ve released so far: REPLICA, DREAMING EAGLES, SUPERZERO… they’re all top-notch books from truly world-class talent.

One of the first books they released happened to be the one that has attracted the most attention – the pairing of superstar writer Marguerite Bennett and bold artist Ariela Kristantina was an appealing prospect but I don’t think anybody expected the gothic, gory and downright sexy book they eventually delivered: INSEXTS is simply something else.

The second issue hits the shelves this week – we give you a teaser of what you get in our preview below and then, underneath, Leonard reviews the book for your delight and delectation…

“At the dusk of a century, a pair of vengeful Victorian vixens discover a horrifying power that transforms them into rich and strange new creatures. Armed with their dark, evolving forms, they descend into a world of the cultured and occult, with new senses and new sensuality, to forge a life for themselves and the child of their love.

This new monthly series is the brainchild of writer Marguerite Bennett (A-Force, Angela, Red Sonja) and artist Ariela Kristantina (Wolverines, Deep State), a comic unlike any you’ve seen before!

Release Date: 13th January 2015 / Full Colour / Diamond Code: NOV151019

Leonard says: “There’s a strong, powerful sex-musk that pervades this entire book, from the easy suppleness of Kristantina’s art to the period-heavy dialogue throughout, courtesy of Bennett (someone who, I’m guessing, is quite the Anglophile, especially that of the Victorian era – quite the corset collection, I imagine!).

The title, INSEXTS, says it all and makes it very clear to anyone picking up this title that they should be prepared for adult themes and strong erotic imagery from the off – there’s no pussy-footing about here. (Well, maybe there is but it happens off camera, if you catch my drift!) This is not a comic for leaving around for the kiddie-winks to be stumbling across, that’s for sure.

A comparison that comes to mind is Anne Rice’s VAMPIRE CHRONICLES – the same heady mixture of cruel violence and charged eroticism drips from every page. That, paired with a fated couple with supernatural abilities, a child of mystery, a heavy mist hanging over the city and bodies piling up left, right and centre makes it very easy to forget this is set in dank Victorian London instead of beside the stifling Bayou of Rice’s books.

That being said, I don’t think Bennett will want to stay underneath that shadow for too long and the cliffhanger of this book could set INSEXTS on a path that might leave the body’s ‘bumping in the night’ to one side for a spell and have the girls sharpening their claws… That’s a very good point, y’know! I haven’t quite worked out if we’re supposed to be rooting for Mariah and Lady Bertram, if they are our heroines or not! Something tells me, like Lestat and Louis, there’s a lot of grey in there to be getting on with…!”
