Many Bothan spies may have died to get the plans of Death Star 2, ahead of STAR WARS EPISODE VI: RETURN OF THE JEDI. But back before A NEW HOPE, if the first teaser trailer for ROGUE ONE has anything to say about it, the Rebels were a bit more proactive. The first STAR WARS spin-off film follows a bunch of mercenaries, bent on being an absolute thorn in the Empire’s side – they aim to misbehave, you might say.
Rapscallion Jyn Erso, played by FELICITY JONES, is charged by a young Mon Mothma (played by an unknown actress but one who bares a striking resemblance to Original Trilogy actress CAROLINE BLAKISTON) to infiltrate and sabotage a crucial weapons test aboard the under-construction Death Star, prior to the events of EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE.
(It’s interesting that the Mon Mothma actress is still un-named at this point – could Disney be playing with the ‘young actor CGI’ technology they invested so heavily in for TRON: LEGACY? And, if that’s the case and they’re going for full-on representation of Original Trilogy performances, we’re guessing that Ben Mendelsohn isn’t playing Governor Tarkin but somebody new, to oversee the Death Star construction? Contributor Neil Williamson has an interesting theory, supported by a speculative post by Nerdist…)
@EnglishmanSDCC my guess, he's playing Thrawn just not with the blue face

Which would be cool!
Erso is joined on her mission by quite the band of fellow miscreants, including Donnie Yen (IP MAN), Riz Ahmed (FOUR LIONS) and also Diego Luna (THE TERMINAL, ELYSIUM), which the trailer shows that Disney are aiming to place him in the Oscar Issac ‘swashbuckling heartthrob’ role; they are prepped for the daring adventure by Forest Whitaker, last seen in the boxing drama SOUTHPAW and a man always welcome on the big screen.
No word yet on what Mads Mikkelsen‘s involvement in the film shall be, considering he was once up for the lead role in ROGUE ONE – and, likewise, we don’t know what Alan Tudyk is going to be up to but that guy is becoming known for his voice performances – we’ll keep our ears open.
The filming for GARETH EDWARDS‘ ‘STAR WARS Story‘ (I still prefer the Anthology moniker- go figure…) has come to a close at ELSTREE STUDIOS near London and is now knee-deep in post-production. Of course, many fans are curious as to how much will be ready for this July… AND what, if anything, will be brought to the various cons of the summer, what with Star Wars Celebration being held in London, the weekend before San Diego Comic-Con. More than likely, ROGUE ONE will have a big presence at SWC but those venturing to California will be hoping and praying that the film will have some representation in Hall H as well. Fingers crossed.
ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To for Lucasfilm and distributed by Walt Disney Studios, is a spin-off film within the STAR WARS franchise, set prior to the events of STAR WARS EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE. Directed by GARETH EDWARDS and written by GARY WHITTA and Chris Weltz, the film follows the foundation of the Galactic Empire, when a wayward band of Rebel fighters comes together to carry out a desperate mission: to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor’s rule. The film stars FELICITY JONES, Diego Luna, RIZ AHMED, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen and Alan Tudyk. The film is scheduled for a 16th December, 2016 worldwide release.
