This July, thousands of pop culture fans will be descending on San Diego to celebrate the brightest and best in comics, movies, television, animation and artistry. But they’ll be doing it in a renovated San Diego Convention Centre which will be providing its own ‘bright and best’ with some new and improved elements to the complex, including a dazzling LED lighting rig, installed into the Sails Pavilion.
In a gala presentation held on Thursday 22nd February, hosted inside the renovated Sails Pavilion, dignitaires and press were treated to a son-et-lumiere show which showcased the $16.7 million upgrades to the facility, including a new fabric roof, concrete flooring, lighting and fire suppression water cannons. While many of the upgrades were required as part of the degradation of materials over the busy 29-year lifespan of the Convention Centre, the LED addition – utilising technology as used to illuminate the Empire State Building – is a eye-catching cherry on top of the cake.
No doubt, the Convention Centre team will have something extra special in mind when San Diego Comic-Con rolls into town – a lightshow to dazzle attendees, no doubt camped on the tarmac over the course of the weekend.
San Diego Convention Centre: “After 14 months of work, we are proud to unveil the newly renovated Sails Pavilion at the San Diego Convention Center. The exhibit space upgrades were unveiled at a press conference which includes remarks from San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners Rafael Castellanos and culminates in the reveal of our illuminating addition to the San Diego skyline.”
