As a fan of the original movie, when given a chance to see a press screening of INCREDIBLES 2, you don’t say no. I replied yes right away – and then quickly requested the time off work to see it, since it was in the middle of the day! I am so glad I did, as this movie was absolutely worth the fourteen year wait.
The movie picks up shortly after the first 2004 film left off (which explains why, in the trailers, everyone appears to be the same age as when we last saw them – it’s because they are!). Again written and directed by that films Brad Bird (who also voices superhero couturier extraordinaire Edna Mode), this latest installment sees matriarch Helen Parr (Elastigirl, voiced by Holly Hunter) taking part in a publicity campaign to restore the public image of the supers, while Bob Parr (Craig T. Nelson) is literally left holding the baby, in the form of rapidly evolving youngest Jack-Jack who is quickly – and chaotically – growing into his powers.
Without going into spoilers, one of my favourite scenes involves Jack-Jack, and judging from the audience reaction at this scene, I wasn’t the only one who loved it. The film itself was well paced, the plot was enjoyable, seeing Bob attempt to be a “Mr. Mom” while Helen was out saving the city was fun. The new characters they introduced were terrific, and I’d love a spin-off with some of them, if you’re listening Disney… The score from Michael Giacchino, who scored the first movie, and got an Oscar nomination for it was great as to be expected from him.
Just as a bonus, no Disney/Pixar movie would be complete without two things; inside the film itself, a A113 Easter Egg and, while it wasn’t as obvious as others, it’s there, trust me – one for the eagle-eyed viewer. Secondly, we’re also treated to a new Pixar Short before the movie; this time, it was BAO, a very heart-warming story about a ageing and lonely Chinese mother, suffering from ’empty nest syndrome’, who receives an unexpected chance at motherhood when her homemade bao (Chinese dumpling) comes to life. Sounds bizarre but works really well – warning, there comes one slightly creepy moment. Just a heads-up!
I give the movie a strong 8.5/10. I don’t want to go into too many spoilers, while it wasn’t a perfect movie it was one of my favorite movies of the year so far. The main twist was a little obvious. It could have also used more Jack-Jack, afterall we’ve been waiting 14 years to see his powerset. It ranks in the top section of my favorite movies so far of 2018.
The movie opens across the US on June 15th 2018 – INCREDIBLES 2 introduces a lot of new characters who could easily play a role if another sequel eventually emerges. Which if there is, I hope we don’t need to wait another 14 years…!

The synopsis of the film is as follows: “Everyone’s favorite family of superheroes is back in Incredibles 2 but this time Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is in the spotlight, leaving Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell) and Dash (voice of Huck Milner) to navigate the day-to-day heroics of normal life. It’s a tough transition for everyone, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby Jack-Jack’s emerging superpowers. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) must find a way to work together again which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible.“
