Home News From The 'Verse Comics First Look: Marvel brings the TV incarnation of AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. to...

logo - our cup o' teaOkay, this is where it could get just a li-iiiiiiiiiitle bit confusing.

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby‘s S.H.I.E.L.D. has existed on the page of Marvel Comics for donkeys years – indeed the organisation celebrated its Fiftieth Anniversary back in August, appearing first in Strange Tales #135, in 1965. Acting as the spy network in the shadows of the more bombastic costumed superheroes of the core titles, S.H.I.E.L.D. has served a number of purposes over the years: allies and conspirators, heroes and villains.

However, when S.H.I.E.L.D. was integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (in this incarnation, Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division), they were full blown defenders of the red, white and blue; the buffer between governmental oversight and the mighty Avengers Initiative. (Okay, nobody knew that they had been infiltrated by H.Y.D.R.A. but, hey, you snooze, you lose, right?)

A number of characters were ported over from the comics to make an appearance in the MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. television series – Director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Victoria Hand (SAFFRON BURROWS), Bobbi Morse, aka Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki), and others – but there were a number of original creations just for the show: Phil Coulson (played by Clark Gregg), Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) and the ever-lovable Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons (played by IAIN DE CAESTECKER and ELIZABETH HENSTRIDGE), and more. This delineation provided a buffer against what what happening on the page and what was taking place on the small screen.

Well, no more.

As of this January, the television version of S.H.I.E.L.D. makes the transition to the comics, supplanting the existing iteration as part of the shake-up in the wake of SECRET WARS. No more wondering when such-and-such a character will be making an appearance… Because now they’ll be doing it both.

If juggling between the Television Department and the Cinematic Universe was a bit of a sticky situation, imagine how this is going to throw a spanner in the works. It’ll be interesting to see how the new run will mirror what we know from the small screen exploits – and what will happen when the INHUMANS finally get their moment in the sun, coming to cinemas in the next few years. See? Told you this could be a handful…
