Busy week at Comic-Con Headquarters: not only have they announced the latest Comic-Con Icon Award recipient – the legendary Marie Severin – and revealed the date for the Open Online Badge Registration for next years San Diego Comic-Con (as well as kicking off, ahem, a certain court case), the committee have also today unveiled four more illustrious names invited along to next March’s WonderCon Anaheim.
The guest list already has Jim Lee, Ed Piskor, V.E. Schwab, Liam Sharp, Ryan Benjamin, Kevin Hearne, Cat Staggs, Mark Waid, Sergio Aragonés, Ryan Benjamin, Jody Houser and John Jennings on it – and these four sit nicely alongside them, as top shelf comics talent.
The newly announced names are:
- MARK EVANIER (Writer, producer, comics historian: KIRBY KING OF COMICS, GARFIELD)
- DAN JURGENS (Writer, artist: SUPERMAN, ACTION COMICS, BATMAN BEYOND)
- DAVID PETERSEN (Writer, artist, creator: MOUSE GUARD graphic novel series)
- LAINI TAYLOR (Author: DAUGHTER OF SMOKE & BONE Trilogy)
Amazing additions. In particular, Jurgens is a bonafide rockstar in the comics landscape and any panel with the legendary Evanier is a must attend… marvelous stuff. Comic-Con International tell us to keep our eyes open for more guest announcements ‘in December’ – nicely vague! Watch this space, I guess…
(Writer, producer, comics historian: KIRBY KING OF COMICS, GARFIELD)
Mark Evanier has been writing comic books since he was 17, having started reading them when he was about that many minutes old. He apprenticed with the great Jack Kirby and has written much about Jack and comic book history. He’s written countless comics including many with the superstars of Disney, Warner Brothers and Hanna-Barbera, as well as BLACKHAWK and others for DC, his own co-creations including THE DNAgents, CROSSFIRE, and MAGNOR, plus he does something (God knows what) on GROO THE WANDERER with Sergio Aragonés. He’s also written hundreds of hours for TV including sitcoms, variety shows and cartoons, including writing/producing 20 years of Garfield the Cat.
(Writer, artist: SUPERMAN, ACTION COMICS, BATMAN BEYOND)
Dan Jurgens began his comics career over 35 years ago as an artist on DC Comics’ THE WARLORD. He then created, wrote and drew BOOSTER GOLD and added LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, FLASH GORDON, GREEN ARROW, and JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA to his resumé. Most notably, he logged a ten-year-plus run as writer/artist on SUPERMAN including the best-selling “Death of Superman” story arc for which he won the National Cartoonists Society Award. Jurgens followed up with the mega-hit crossover ZERO HOUR, which redefined the DC Universe.
More recently, he wrote the acclaimed SUPERMAN: LOIS & CLARK mini-series, which repositioned Superman in the DC Comics universe and helped to set up the company’s Rebirth effort. He is currently writing BATMAN BEYOND and ACTION COMICS FEATURING SUPERMAN as it builds toward its iconic issue #1,000.
(Writer, artist, creator: MOUSE GUARD graphic novel series)
David Petersen was born in 1977 in Flint, Michigan and received a BFA from Eastern Michigan University in 2000. He is the creator of the New York Times bestselling and critically acclaimed graphic novel series MOUSE GUARD, which has been published in 17 languages.
David was the 2007 Russ Manning Award recipient for Promising Newcomer. He has since gone on to win three Eisner Awards and two Harveys for his continued work on the MOUSE GUARD series. In 2016, the MOUSE GUARD series was optioned by 20th Century Fox for feature film adaptation.
