Home Con News SWC 2017 (and Beyond): Star Wars Celebration, skipping 2018

Today came news from ReedPOP that they will not be orchestrating a Star Wars Celebration convention for Disney/Lucasfilm in 2018, much to the surprise of many, seeing as the event has become a regular mainstay for the hardcore fan of the SW Universe. The announcement was posted earlier today on their official website, saying that “[…] the next official STAR WARS CELEBRATION is slated for a location and date soon-to-be announced, in 2019.”

This years Celebration is taking place on the weekend of April 13th-16th in Orlando, Florida, after having been in London in 2016 – which we very lucky to attend and covered here – and in Anaheim, the two years prior to that. Fans have started to get used to the idea of brand new films appearing in cineplexes on the dot every year from now till eternity so having the big accompanying party skip a year is a little heartbreaking.

We at An Englishman In San Diego find the news also a bit surprising as fans will be getting the as-yet-untitled HAN SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY movie released by the end of 2018, by that time a lot of the shooting will be done for the next installment in the STAR WARS saga, and there will be plenty of new material still to entice the faithful. However, maybe a break can keep things fresh as a convention – just ask Disney’s D23 Expo. And perhaps it’s the new Disney paymasters thinking to alternate the two events. Who knows?

Are you disappointed by this naccouncement? Does this make you even more eager to snap up those last tickets for this years shindig in Orlando? Comment below, or comment on our Facebook page.
