Home Con News SDCC 2017: Joss Whedon, NOT attending San Diego Comic-Con this July

Warner Bros. will be wanting to capitalise with the success of the juggernaut that is WONDER WOMAN (continuing to break records, becoming the highest grossing film directed by a woman and passing the $300 million domestic box office haul mark), and Comic-Con-attending fans were hoping that the studio would be bringing replacement director of JUSTICE LEAGUE Joss Whedon to the Hall H stage. It would go some way to allay fears of the film’s impetus, in the wake of the departure of original director Zack Snyder – however, the sad word has reached us that we won’t be joining us in San Diego.

Whedon was in London this weekend, overseeing reshoots on JUSTICE LEAGUE, and AEISD Contributor Mark Searby was on hand to press the flesh after meeting him on the street. Mark said that he was looking forward to seeing what he would be bring to Comic-Con next month and Whedon replied by dropping the bad news:

“I won’t be there. Only the second time in twenty years I won’t make it.”

To be fair, this was not entirely unexpected – production had taken quite the knock with the tragic news of the suicide of Snyder’s daughter, Autumn, in March (Whedon was announced as taking over the reins of the film in May.) Whedon has been reported as taking his new role responsibly, not simply as a stand-in director for Snyder, replacing BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE composer Junkie XL with AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON composer Danny Elfman, a few weeks ago. With the film still slated for a November 2017 release date, Warner Bros. and Whedon will be determined to keep the DCU schedule in place.

What this means for the Warner Bros. presentation in San Diego could be a change for what fans were expecting: Whedon will be locked into editing and post-production but cast may be freed for a final Hall H push of the film; the hopes and dreams to have Snyder and Whedon take to to the stage in a united front of their own have now, however, been dashed.

What shall we see from Warner Bros. in San Diego? GREEN LANTERN CORPS cast? BATGIRL announcement? As always, put your thoughts in the comments below.

    • Indeed, you’re absolutely right. There’s zero excuse for the error – the only thing I can think of is that I was juggling three other posts at the time and I was distracted: I have literally no clue where the holy hell Chelsea came from. The error was pointed out to me elsewhere and I’ve edited accordingly. My apologies.
