It’s Monday, it’s Special Guest Announcement Day (which we’re at the beginning of the week through till the end of April) and four more luminaries have been given the invitation by the big-wigs to San Diego Comic-Con 2017 (Thursday 20th to Sunday 23rd July)… and we’re rather happy about this one, because it features somebody we’d really like to catch up with.
Paul Levitz is a comics industry legend, a former VP for DC Comics and one of the principle players in the story of the British Invasion, the topic of which your very own Englishman, yours truly, attempted to cover in a panel last year. Paul did a sterling job of providing incredible background to the whole Invasion and I didn’t get the chance to properly say thank you for his time and expertise. Hopefully, I’ll get the opportunity to redress that balance this Summer.
Joining Paul are three other comics creatives that add their flags to the mast, alongside the already announced guests: Marguerite Bennett, Box Brown, Gail Carriger, Gemma Correll, Paul Dini, Brigitte Findakly, Mike Grell, Simon Hanselmann, Robin Hobb, John Holmstrom, Victoria Jamieson, Marjorie Liu, Jonathan Maberry, John Morrow, Dustin Nguyen, Keith Pollard, Eduardo Risso, Mike Royer, Brian Selznick, R. Sikoryak, Alex Simmons, Jeff Smith, Joe Staton, William Stout, J. Michael Straczynski, Bruce Timm, and Lewis Trondheim…
- MELANIE GILLMAN (Cartoonist: AS THE CROW FLIES / STAGE DREAMS)
- NATHAN HALE (Cartoonist: NATHAN HALE’S HAZARDOUS TALES series)
- PAUL LEVITZ (Writer, editor, publisher: 75 YEARS OF DC COMICS: THE ART OF MODERN MYTH-MAKING)
- SONNY LEW (Writer, artist: THE ART OF CHARLIE CHAN HOCK CHYE / artist: DOCTOR FATE)
That brings us to thirty-one names – and there’s still more to come. Join us next Monday for Wave Nine – anyone that you’d like to see on the list?
We will, of course, be updating the Special Guests listings as the names are released in the coming weeks – you’ll be able to find full bio for the artists, writers and creatives at our dedicated Utility Belt pages, here:

(Cartoonist: AS THE CROW FLIES / STAGE DREAMS)
Melanie Gillman is a queer, nonbinary cartoonist who specializes in LGBTQ YA comics. They’re the creator of AS THE CROWS FLIES (Iron Circus Comics, 2017) and STAGE DREAMS (Lerner/Graphic Universe, 2019), and are writing the new STEVEN UNIVERSE comics series for BOOM! Studios.
They are also the co-editor and publisher of THE OTHER SIDE, an anthology of queer paranormal romance comics. Their work has won a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators, and been nominated for an Eisner and an Ignatz. They are currently living in Tulsa, OK, where they are a 2017 fellow in the Tulsa Artist Fellowship program.
(Cartoonist: NATHAN HALE’S HAZARDOUS TALES series)
A superstar in elementary school libraries across the country, Nathan Hale has been nominated for an Eisner Award four times. Every book in the NATHAN HALE’S HAZARDOUS TALES series has spent time on the New York Times bestseller list—two made it to #1 (UNDERGROUND ABDUCTOR and ALAMO ALL-STARS), which is pretty exciting for non-fiction comics about American history. In addition, Hale has provided the illustrations for the fairy tale mash-ups RAPUNZEL’S REVENGE and CALAMITY JACK, written by Dean and Shannon Hale (no relation).
This year sees the launch of Nathan’s first non-history graphic novel, the Moebius-inspired, science fiction adventure, ONE TRICK PONY.
(Writer, editor, publisher: 75 YEARS OF DC COMICS: THE ART OF MODERN MYTH-MAKING)
Paul Levitz is a comics fan (THE COMIC READER), editor (BATMAN), writer (LEGION OF SUPER HEROES, executive (30 years at DC, ending as president & publisher), historian (75 YEARS OF DC COMICS: THE ART OF MODERN MYTH-MAKING (Taschen, 2010)) and educator (including the American Graphic Novel at Columbia). He won two consecutive annual Comic Art Fan Awards for Best Fanzine, received Comic-Con International’s Inkpot Award, the prestigious Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award, the Comics Industry Appreciation Award from ComicsPro and the Dick Giordano Humanitarian Award from the Hero Initiative.
His Taschen book won the Eisner Award, the Eagle Award and Munich’s Peng Pris, and was re-released in revised form as three volumes in 2013-15. His latest book is WILL EISNER: CHAMPION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL (Abrams ComicArts, 2014). Levitz also serves on the boards of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, and BOOM! Studios.
(Writer, artist: THE ART OF CHARLIE CHAN HOCK CHYE / artist: DOCTOR FATE)
Sonny Liew‘s THE ART OF CHARLIE CHAN HOCK CHYE was a New York Times bestseller, and the first graphic novel to win the Singapore Literature Prize. Other works include THE SHADOW HERO (with Gene Luen Yang), DOCTOR FATE (with Paul Levitz), and MALINKY ROBOT, as well as titles for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Vertigo, First Second Books, Boom Studios, IDW, Image Comics, and Disney Press.
Sonny has been nominated for multiple Eisner Awards for his art, and for spearheading LIQUID CITY, a multi-volume comics anthology featuring creators from Southeast Asia.
