Guardians Of The Galaxy fans, hoping for a chance to see the film ahead of it’s 1st August release date have been handed a cold cup o’ coffee by the film’s director James Gunn as he announces that it will not be screening at San Diego Comic-Con 2014.
No, I’m seriously not happy. Someone’s got to pay for this. Storm the Mouse House. Bring me the head of Kevin Fiege! Scorch the Earth for future generations, burn the goddamn place to the ground!!
Okay, okay, maybe I’m being a little extreme. A little. But, I, along with many other fans, were holding out with fingers crossed for advance screenings of this latest Marvel blockbuster, in much the same way as when the studio brought Captain America: The Winter Soldier to San Diego screens during SDCC 2011, weeks before the film’s scheduled release date.
On James Gunn’s Facebook:
“To answer questions I’m being asked a lot, and to be clear: We are only screening 17 minutes of #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy on Monday at the sneak peek in IMAX theaters, not the entire film. We are not going to suddenly surprise people who show up and show them the whole movie, in part because the movie isn’t completely finished, and in part because we don’t want people who made other plans to be leaving the theater after 17 minutes. So feel free to make other plans.
Also: Yes, the 17 minutes shown Monday is different from the footage showing at Disney theme parks.
And finally, no, I am sorry we are not planning on showing the film at San Diego Comicon. Really.
You can see the whole movie August 1 (or whenever it opens in your country). There are no other planned screenings before that time, other than the various premieres.”
We’ll let the misspelling of ‘comicon’ go for a moment – we have bigger fish to fry here.
So, apart from the banners that have already made their appearance around San Diego ahead of this years Con, it’s looking very possible that the only presence the Guardians will actually have is the many, many pieces of merchandise and toys that will litter the Exhibition Floor. Some sites have speculated that Marvel will roll out the team for one final panel at their Hall H presentation, whenever that may be – we maintain that this is incredibly unlikely as Gunn and his cast will be knee-deep in promotion duties worldwide at that point, with the film getting its L.A. premiere on the Monday 21st before heading to London for its premiere there on Sunday 27th – Gunn has already stated on Twitter that he will be in Singapore during the duration of SDCC.
Then again, the film does open the following week – it’s admittedly not that long a wait for everybody and, if anyone’s wanting to get an advance glimpse, there’s always the IMAX Sneak Peek’s that some lucky punters have bagged seats for this Monday. Not that we’ve got any. And we’ll still be on a transatlantic flight back from San Diego when the film drops so we’ll miss the first showing.
‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ is a Marvel Studios production, filmed at Shepperton Studios, London. The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker and Dave Bautista and is scheduled for release on 1st August, 2014. And not a second sooner.
