Home Con News SDCC 2015: ‘Con Man’ producer lets slip… Could Doctor Who be returning...

our cup o teaUPDATE: 27/05/2015: The BBC have confirmed that Doctor Who is indeed coming to San Diego Comic-Con, it’s going to be on the Thursday, it’s going to be in Hall H… and Peter Capaldi is going to be there, along with his showrunner exec producer Steven Moffat, returning for the first time since 2013. And, boy, does he sound excited by it!

Doctor Who returns to San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 9. Following his record-breaking debut season as the Doctor, Peter Capaldi will make his first ever appearance at the event with Jenna Coleman (Clara), Michelle Gomez (Missy), lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat and executive producer Brian Minchin.

Peter Capaldi commented, ‘Tales of San Diego Comic-Con are told in awe on every set around the known fantasy/sci-fi production world. It’s become a fabled kingdom. One I am thrilled to find myself heading for. And to appear in the legendary Hall H is a further twist to the cosplay and comic madness I may never recover from.’”

One of the more eagerly anticipated shows to show its face in San Diego this July is the crowd-funded Con Man, put together by Firefly’s Alan Tudyk (Suburgatory / Firefly) and producer P.J. Haarsma. fans have been very insistent to hear whether it will be making its debut at Comic-Con or Nerd HQ, with constant tweets and Facebook posts to the fact.

Well, P.J. has been a little more forthcoming on details in the last couple of days, with Comic-Con International beginning to pin down slots for prospective applicants – he has confirmed that, yes, there’s going to be panels at both. But, in doing so, that’s not all the information he’s let slip. And there’s one titbit that’s very interesting to us Brits.

As reported by The San Diego Comic-Con Unofficial Blog, Haarsma took part in a ‘talkback’ chat session, held with backers from their Indiegogo campaign, in which he revealed the details as confirmed to him of the date and time of their panel:

Question: More about Comic-Con and Nerd HQ please?

Haarsma: Okay, panel is Thursday the 9th, I think it’s at 3:45. It’s right between Doctor Who and Marvel, and then we’ll be doing press in the morning, and then after hopefully there will be a party somewhere and we’ll announce it, and then Friday Alan’s going to be hosting Nerd HQ and we’ll be doing a Con Man panel at Nerd HQ and then partying there Friday night.

Doctor Who, eh? Oh, really? [happy dance!]

As you may be aware, Doctor Who skipped SDCC last year, what with showrunner Steven Moffat‘s frustration at the social media leak of footage shown at the 50th Anniversary panel held in Hall H in 2013, but news of the shows return will certainly please people, desperate to see their first glimpse of Peter Capaldi in San Diego. As SDCC Blog note, while the details of their own panel will be pretty solid to allow them to prepare the cast around their other commitments in town, the Con Man production may have been provided the info of the bookending panels, to give them an idea of who will be in the room for it.

And, let’s be honest, these are BIG panels: Doctor Who‘s viewing figures on BBC America have been incredibly impressive, considering the prickly characterisation of the Twelfth Doctor by Capaldi. And it’s not like anyone would not be interested in seeing what Marvel Television has store, with the possibility of a preview screening of AKA Jessica Jones, teasing fans out of the woodwork!

The only rooms that would be suitable for such panels would be the three ‘big boys’: Hall H (6,000 capacity), Ballroom 20 (4,900) and Indigo Ballroom in the Hilton Bayfront (2,600). Any of these would be maxed out by such a line-up so any statement made by Yours Truly in last Sunday’s Talkin’ Comic-Con: A Cup O’ Tea with… hangout, regarding ‘just being able to walk in to Hall H on a Thursday’ might have been a little premature!

Of course, nothing is set in stone and any or all options are still on the table: we’ll keep our eyes open and, of course, report on any details as soon as they are made more official…
