Kiss’ Gene Simmons has been going for years, of course; in 2012, VH1 Classic Rock hosted a SDCC Attendee opening night party, curated by Rob Zombie; and, in 2013, Metallica not only held a Hall H panel for their film Metallica Through the Never on the Friday of San Diego Comic-Con 2013, they then headed out into the city to take to the stage for a select collective of 1,463 fans. This year, it appears that California rockers Linkin Park are continuing the nerd/rocker tradition, playing an ‘intimate private performance’ at some point over the course of the Con.
iHeartRadio is running a competition this week for lucky fans of the band to not only land badges for SDCC – not that we’re interested in the competition, as such – as Brits, we can’t enter anyway, the competition is for U.S. entrants only – but, as Metallica fans who attended their panel and landed tickets to that gig last year can attest, it’s not just competition winners that’ll make it into the room to experience their rock heroes live.
This isn’t Linkin Park’s first brush with Comic-Con, of course – the Transformers films, helmed by long time LP fan Michael Bay, have all featured the band’s music on all of the scores, including the third in the franchise, Dark Of The Moon. As a promotional tie-in for that film, the band had their own very limited edition Hasbro Linkin Park/Transformer of Soundwave that was released as a SDCC exclusive in 2012, numbering only in the couple of thousands.
The latest in the franchise, Transformers: Age Of Extinction, is released a month previously and it wouldn’t be a massive stretch to think that Paramount would like to extend the interest in the film into San Diego Comic-Con week with a band performance, maybe even another toy exclusive.
To remind you – not to rub salt in the wound, honest – the iHeartRadio competition is open for U.S. applicants only and includes, as well as the prized SDCC badges, flights to and from San Diego from anywhere in the U.S., two nights hotel accommodation (hotel rooms?! that’s like gold dust in itself!), VIP backstage passes to the Linkin Park gig and more. From the iHeartRadio competition website:
Linkin Park is invading Comic-Con this year and iHeartRadio is sending one lucky winner and a friend to San Diego to check out all the action! Fly to San Diego where you will hang out with celebs, see previews of blockbuster movies before anyone else, and check out the coolest new gadgets first.
After you’re done touring Comic-Con, head backstage to meet Linkin Park! Since you’re the band’s VIP, you will be front and center for an intimate private performance. Then Mike Shinoda will hand you one of his PRS’ guitars signed by the band to take home! Don’t miss out on an experience you’ll always remember.
No date has been confirmed by iHeartRadio or on the bands website or social media but the concert is expected to take place on either the Friday 25th or Saturday 26th July. If you’re a LP fan, we’ll keep you posted if we hear of any way you can get in to see this frenetic SDCC off-site event.
