This is very much a worthy cause, that anyone on either side of the pond would feel worthwhile donating to – New York Comic Con organisers ReedPOP have teamed up with actor Keanu Reeves, the film-mentoring council CINE and a host of Hollywood and Puerto Rican filmmakers to form a especially designated flood relief effort to help raise funds in the wake of the horrific Hurricane Maria.
The charity effort aims to raise $200,000 over the course of this weekends NYCC, being held at the Javits Centre in downtown New York (Thursday 5th – Sunday 8th October), by galvanising not only the attendees on site but anyone that heads to the NYCC homepage and clicks on the relief fund link at the top: http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com
Lance Fensterman, Global Head of ReedPOP, says in the official release, “New York Comic Con celebrates the fictional heroes that entertain and amaze us in film, tv and comics, but this is a time for all of us to step up and follow in the image of those heroes we adore. It’s time for us to act and lend a helping hand to those affected by this devastating tragedy.”
The effort has been spearheaded by Walter Josten of Blue Rider Films, Luillo Ruiz of Pimienta Films and Producers Jimmy Dodson and Luis Riefkohl, who have a connection to region due to of their recent filming on location in Puerto Rico. Films shot there include:
- REPLICAS starring Keanu Reeves;
- IMPRISONED with Laurence Fishburne, Juan Pablo Raba, Juana Acosta and Edward James Olmos;
- CIGARETTE headlined by John Travolta;
- ANA featuring Andy Garcia, Dafne Keen, and Jeanne Tripplehorn;
- DRIVEN currently filming with Jason Sudeikis, Lee Pace, Corey Stoll, and Judy Greer;
- and PRIMAL with Nicolas Cage, which is committed to commencing production in October 2017.
This is stirling effort by everyone involved and we’re going to do our best to contribute to it in our own small way by running a fundraising effort as part of this weekend’s Talkin’ Comic-Com: A Cup O’ Tea with An Englishman In San Diego. Whether you donate during that show, whether you click on the link on the NYCC homepage, if you head to the NYCC 2017 page of the CINE.org website, however you donate, we at An Englishman in San Diego sincerely hope that you do what you can to help. Thank you.
